Lot Essay

These ornate chairs, with golden brass cabled frame and Greek doric columnar legs, are similar in design to those supplied to Samuel Whitbread II, for Southill Park, Bedfordshire, under the direction of the architect Henry Holland (d. 1806). Holland's furniture designs reflected the latest French fashions and he employed the leading cabinet-maker's such as Morel and Hughes and Marsh and Tatham (see F. Watson F.S.A, 'The Furniture and Decoration', Southill, A Regency House, London, 1951, p. 21. and fig. 46, and R. Edwards, The Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture, London, 1964, p. 162, fig. 183). A similar pair of chairs from Hartwell House, Buckinghamshire, were illustrated by Ayer & Co. of Bath, 'The Antique Dealer's Fair and Exhibition', Handbook, 1958, stand no. 85. A further related pair were sold anonymously in these Rooms, 18 November 1993, lot 29.
