Lot Essay

The chairs, with their serpentined and acanthus-wrapped uprights, ribboned splats and hermed legs with Gothic-cusped frets, relate to 'Parlour Chair' patterns in Robert Manwaring's The Chair-Maker's Guide, 1766 (pls. 31 and 32).
