Lot Essay
The reeded leg and curved tablet toprail of this set of ten dining-chairs is closely related to a set of six sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 8 July 1999, lot 22. The latter were attributed to George Bullock on the strength of the similarities between them and the chair supplied by Bullock for Napoleon's use at New Longwood, St Helena (sold from the Calvin Bullock Collection, in these Rooms, 8 May 1985, lot 103 and discussed in M. Levy 'Houses and Furniture for Napoleon on St Helena', Furniture History, 1998, pp. 66-67 and 94, fig. 48).
A related set of eighteen (including six later side chairs) was sold Sotheby's London, 11 July 1997, lot 218 (26,450).
