The later moulded rectangular hinged ratcheted top with a retractable candleslide to each side, above a turned shaft and spirally-fluted cut-baluster stem, on cabriole legs and pad feet, the top damaged, one foot with repaired break

Lot Essay

A related tripod reading-table but with vertically-fluted shaft was sold at Sotheby's London, 15 July 1994, lot 47 (5,980). A design for a tripod reading-stand with hinged ratcheted top and candle-slides, described as a 'Reading or Music Desk', is illustrated in William Ince and John Mayhew, The Universal System of Household Furniture, 1762, pl. XXVI.
