A GEORGE IV MAHOGANY BOWFRONT SECRETAIRE-BOOKCASE

Inlaid overall with boxwood and ebonized banding, the pediment centred by an arch and with pendant brackets, above a pair of geometrically- glazed doors, enclosing three removable shelves, above a secretaire drawer with a brass plaque to the front, inscribed 'This secretaire Was made by Mordeccai Kitching and Presented to his much loved Sister Lucy Archer Kitching on the occasion of her Marriage to George Francis Bristow at the Holy Trinity Church Hull, July 24th 1828' and enclosing a central door inlaid with a marquetry vase of flowers and flanked by pigeon-holes and drawers, above a green baize-lined writing-surface with hinged well, above three graduated drawers and a waved apron, on bracket feet, the reverse with a depository label for 'LANGHAM BROWNE LTD, LYMINGTON', in the name of 'MISS LEITHEAD' and traces of a further depository label

Lot Essay

Mordeccai Kitching, is listed in the Hull Trade Directories of 1838 as a cabinet-maker at 21 Bridge Street. It appears that he ceased trading in Hull soon after 1840. George Francis Bristow is recorded as a grocer at 83 Queen Street and at various other addresses in Hull from 1846-76, and the family is still listed in the Hull Directories until 1939.
