Lot Essay

John Pardoe, cabinet-maker and upholsterer (d. 1748), was established at Temple Bar in the Strand and between 1717-23 supplied furnishings for Erdigg, Denbighshire, North Wales, mainly for sconces and mirrors. He was also employed by Lord Leigh of Stoneleigh, Warwickshire around 1738. Another patron was Alderman Hoare of Barn Elms, whose son was Sir Richard Colt Hoare, 2nd Bt. of Stourhead. This chest is closely related to one illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 364, fig. 710 and sold Sotheby's London, 23 May 1980, lot 154.
