The waved toprails centred with scalloped shells flanked by acanthus husks above a vase-shaped splat, with outcurved shepherds crook arms, and green floral-patterned padded drop-in seat above a plain frieze with a pair of scallop shells, on shell-headed cabriole legs and claw feet, one back leg with restored break, the back feet tipped, restorations, the applied carving and the armrests probably replaced

Lot Essay

This form of twin-chairback settee with its vase-shaped splat and shepherd's crook arm is related to a later example executed in mahogany in the Gerstenfeld Collection (E. Lennox-Boyd ed., Masterpieces of English Furniture, London, 1998, cat. no. 53, p. 219), and formerly at Compton Castle, Somerset, sold in these Rooms, 21 November 1985, lot 164.
