The l786 inventory of Elizabeth, Duchess of Northumberland's apartment at Northumberland House, London included related but open fronted cabinets, likely to have been supplied in the l750s by Messrs William and John Linnell and described as '2 Chinese railing china-cases with japan'd tops' (one offered anonymously, in these Rooms, 12 November l998, lot 109). The Linnell firm also supplied related items for Badminton House, Gloucestershire in the early l750s (see H. Hayward, William and John Linnell, London, l980, vol. I, pls. 5 and 5a, and vol. II, fig. 218).
A related mahogany 'railed china stand', with one open tier and another with fretted doors, is also likely to have been introduced to Ham House, Richmond in the l750s, it was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 14 April l984, lot 151.
