The design of these chairs is based on one dated 1788 in the Gillows Estimate Sketch Books, and made for the dining-room, Workington Hall, Cumberland, although the reeded fan at the centre of the splat was designed with carved wheat ears (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs: 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, no. 272).
