Lot Essay

The oval back and husk-trailed medallion with hollowed base, relates to a set of chairs almost certainly supplied by Mayhew and Ince, to the 3rd Earl of Darnley, for Cobham Hall, Kent, sold in these Rooms, 19 November 1992, lot 104. The arm pattern features on an armchair, sold by Sir Michael Sobell, in these Rooms, 2 February 1995, lot 367. The latter chair and the present chair, have the same arm construction and decoration as those on a set of chairs at Chirk Castle, Denbigshire which are now attributed to Mayhew and Ince (The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, p. 596).
