Unkoku Tojo was the eldest son of Toteki and a descendant of Unkoku Togan who took Sesshu for his model. It was Unkoku Togan who gave his name to the Unkoku school.
Unkoku Tojo was born in 1639 and followed in his father's footsteps, succeeding to the family estate in 1664. While developing as an artist, he was awarded the imperial honorary title of hokkyo at the age of thirty-seven.
His known works have been discussed and mentioned by Jun Wakisaki, Chief Curator of Osaka City Museum of Art in Kobijutsu, no. 78, and by Satoru Sakakibara, Curator, Suntory Museum of Art, Tokyo.
