The coach in this picture is very close in style to Royal Mail coaches of the mid-1830s, including the colouring and the form of the windows. However, the presence of so many passengers and the absence of a Mail Guard shows it to be a stage coach. William Smith & Co. ran two coaches to Leeds from The Three Cups, Aldersgate Street.

A variant of this picture, described by Beckett as 'a copy of [the present picture], but probably by Herring', was sold at Sotheby's, 4 April 1973, lot 116. The later picture's composition is very similar, but shows an Exeter coach and the sign of the inn has been changed for that of The Red Lion.
