Lot Essay

The sitter seems likely to have been either the daughter of Sir Thomas Honywood (1637-1702), who married Sir John Cotton, 3rd Bt. (1621-1702) of Conington, Huntingdon, or the daughter of Sir Joseph Sheldon who married Sir John Cotton, 2nd Bt., (d.1713) of Madingley Hall, Cambridge. The portrait would appear to date from the mid-to-late 1660s.
