Lot Essay

Robert Grimston of Neswick, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, was the son of Robert Grimston of Bridlington by his wife Esther, daughter of Thomas Eyres of Neswick. He was educated at Eton, Emmanuel College Cambridge, and Lincolns Inn. He married, first, Elizabeth (d.1771), daughter of Rev. Thomas Stanley, in 1770. By his second wife, whose name is unknown, he had a son John Grimston (d.1846), and three daughters and eventual co-heirs Lucy, who married Sir Robert Wilmot, 3rd Bt., of Chaddesden, Derbyshire, in 1796, Mary, who married Walter Ramsden Fawkes Hawksworth, and Esther, who died unmarried in 1862.
