A pair of Anti-Slavery medallions
three dimensional and painted in polychrome on glass within verre glomis surrounds, both depicting a Negro, kneeling and in chains, sailing ships in the background, bearing the legends O LORD SET THE CAPTIVE FREE and THANK GOD FOR LIBERTY , each in a marble frame, early 19th century, 10cm. dia., overall.
Denmark became the first country to abolish slavery, in 1792. In Britain, the slave trade was prohibited in 1807.
