DONG QICHANG (1555-1636)
Landscape of Mount Hengyun in the Style of Huang Gongwang (1269-1354)
Hanging scroll, ink on silk, 43½ x 16in. (110.5 x 40.6cm.)
Inscribed by the artist: "When Huang Gongwang lived in Hengyun Mountains, he would often visit Tao Nancun and Cao Yunxi (Cao Zhibai, 1271-1355) in Fengliu. [At that time] Huang Gongwang painted an album of eight leaves, which [is now] owned by Shen Sima. I borrowed [the album] to study it. The album is extremely refined and not merely decorative. One spring day, I was passing through Hengyun with Chen Jiru (1558-1639), and together we looked for the place where Huang Gongwang had lived. When I returned home, I painted this work in the spirit of Huang Gongwang's style."
