During his early years in France, Pissarro regularly traveled between Paris and the countryside. One of the principal themes of his work at this time was the exploration of rural imagery. His painting style was influenced by the Barbizon artists, and in particular, by the works of Corot. Pissarro formally referred to himself as a "pupil" of Corot in the catalogues of the Salons of 1864 and 1865. Cour de ferme is one of a small number of Pissarro's early works still in existence, as most were destroyed during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871.
