Lot Essay

Galerie Brame & Lorenceau will include this painting in their forthcoming Fantin-Latour catalogue raisonn.

Fantin-Latour's floral still-life paintings were first exhibited in London at the Royal Academy in 1864. Through James Whistler he met Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Edwards, who purchased many of his flower paintings and helped to establish his reputation in England. Most of Fantin-Latour's flower paintings were sold to English collectors. The Edwards' efforts enabled the artist to get through the difficult years of the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune, and later assured him a regular income.
