Franoise Cachin will include this painting in her forthcoming Signac catalogue raisonn.

In Signac's notes, the present work is numbered 21 and was painted in 1884. A year earlier, Signac had made a small sketch which he entitled Par la plage. The study was included in the 1963-1964 exhibition of Signac at the Muse du Louvre, where it was noted:

Signac spent three consecutive summers at Port-en-Bessin in Normandy. . .At that time he was still under the influence of Monet, Pissarro and Renoir and worked directly from nature. In 1884 he met Seurat and brought him to Port-en-Bessin. Seurat was so inspired by this subject that he painted six canvases there (M.-T. Lemoyne de Forges, Signac, exh. cat., Muse du Louvre, Paris, 1963-1964, p. 5).

In 1884, Signac exhibited four paintings at the Socit des Artistes Indpendants, of which two depicted views of Port-en-Bessin. According to Lemoyne de Forges (ibid., p. 7) it is thought that the present work was one of these.
