Charley Thomas was the son of Morisot's first cousin and one of her earliest patrons, Gabriel Thomas. The present drawing may have been a preparatory sketch for Les enfants de Gabriel Thomas, a painting of Charley and his sister Jeannie (1894; coll. Muse d'Orsay, Paris).
