In April 1911 Matisse purchased the Czanne oil painting Fruits et feuillages, circa 1890 (Rewald, no. 647; Venturi, no. 613), from Bernheim-Jeune. Matisse executed this drawing as a study for a lithograph based on the painting, which was included in the Album Bernheim-Jeune, Paris 1914, pl. V.
