A LATE LOUIS XV GILTWOOD CANAPE
Stamped three times N.Q. FOLIOT, circa 1765
With a molded and foliate-carved frame, the padded back, sides and drop-in cushion upholstered in blue and white striped silk, the undulating crestrail with central flowerhead clasp above a similarly carved apron, on short cabriole legs with scrolled feet, with three small rectangular and two cylindrical pillows, with the blue ink stamp ...oure Centralexposition Paris, some hardware lacking, the box frame that supports the seat later

Lot Essay

Jean-Baptiste Gourdin, matre in 1748.

Son of Jean Gourdin, Jean-Baptiste established his workshop in the rue de Clry near that of his father. He manufactured mostly Louis XV seat-furntiure. This suite is closely related to a fauteuil in the Muse des arts dcoratifs, Paris (inv. 7269) (G.B.Pallot, The Art of the Chair in Eighteenth Century France, Paris, 1989, P. 186).
