EXTREMELY RARE FAULKNER CONTRACT FOR 'TURNABOUT'.
William Faulkner arrived at MGM in May, 1932. He got his first real taste of Hollywood when Howard Hawks bought his short story "Turn About," and hired him to write a screenplay. He wrote two drafts, revising the plot at Irving Thalberg's request to include a role for Joan Crawford. He completed the revised second script on October 22, 1932, but two more writers would work on the screenplay before it was filmed (see Joseph Blotner's "Faulkner" pages 306-310). During this same period he was also proofing the galleys for his novel "Light in August." MGM released the film the following year with the title Today We Live, directed by Howard Hawks and starring Joan Crawford and Gary Cooper. The compensation Faulkner was to receive under the contract was "the sum of one dollar and other good and valuable consideration.
