Upon immigrating to the United States, Carl Muller enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled sculptor in stone and wood. Upon graduating he found great demand for his skills. Between 1900 and 1911, the firm of T.M. Harton, builders of the finest carousels and works exclusively used the creations of either Dentzel or Muller in their finished machine art. Muller is today considered one of the great masters of the craft. This specimen is an extremely fine and, in fact, atypical example. It appears somewhat experimental with delicate legs and a narrow and beautiful head, body, and trappings. It has a slight chest in contrast to Muller's generally robust style; and the head is relatively diminutive. Overall the effect is quite beautiful.
