A NEOLITHIC PAINTED POTTERY JAR
GANSU/YANGSHAO CULTURE, MACHANG PHASE, CIRCA 2000 B.C.
The shoulder painted with a broad, barbed zigzag band between linear borders, with three narrow dotted bands encircling the shoulder repeated in a criss-cross pattern on the neck below the everted rim painted on top with a dogtooth band, all in dark red and black, with a lug handle at the base of the neck and a projecting tab on the lower body opposite, some restoration to rim--10 3/4in. (27.3cm.) high
