Lot Essay

A related chair with similar turnings to the legs and similar arcaded top-rail is illustrated in Dr. B. Cotton The English Regional Chair, Woodbridge, 1991, p.179, fig. NE2276

This unusual chair form has several design features (the shape of the sawn back uprights, the shaped back splats, the arcaded top-rail and leg profile) which indicate that it was made in the North West and probably by the firm of Wilkinson Bros. of Newark, who were first recorded in 1879 and continued trading until 1961.
