Beginning in 1940, upon her return to Cuba, Amelia Pelez began to develop a new visual vocabulary that synthesized her European teachings and her Cuban heritage. During that decade she achieved a personal style making use of a Cuban motif. Her paintings show abstract still life's, generally of fruit, against brilliantly colored backgrounds derived from the stained glass windows and transoms often found in late 19th Century homes in Havana. By this period, the artist had studied in Paris, and her style can be seen as a fusion of European artistic models with native, colonial artistic traditions.The current lot, which dates from 1941, was kept in the artists' home until the current owner purchased it in 1966.
