Lot Essay

This work is one of eight sculptures commissioned directly from the artist by GVG Editions, Monterrey, Mexico. The sculptures were issued in editions of three, each with a unique patina. Tamayo worked with the publishers supervising and approving every detail of production. The sculptures were completed in 1989 and exhibited for the first time in 1990.

Monolithic Head most strongly evinces Tamayo's affinity for the aesthetics of ancient Mexican cultures. Working in a modernist idiom, Tamayo drew inspiration from pre-Colombian art in order to imbue his work with a certain mystical aura. In this sense, the totemic Monolithic Head evokes the mystery of the ancient past with abstract and modern forms.

We are grateful to Mary-Anne Martin for her assistance in cataloguing the present lot. This lot is sold with a photo-certificate signed by Rufino Tamayo and the publisher, dated February, 1990.
