Tilsa studied in the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes (1954-1959) under Fernando de Szyslo. She later traveled to Paris, where she studied humanities at La Sorbonne and furthered her artistic education at the cole des Beaux Arts de Paris.
Upon her return to Lima, she became an active member of the Seventies generation that emerged in the field of Peruvian painting. This group aimed to recreate the myths and dreams derived from Surrealism along the lines of local pre-Columbian beliefs and formalism. Tilsa was undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary members of this group, creating an imaginative personal universe embedded with poetic and erotic figures. Mujer volando masterfully displays the artist's interest in figuration and the surrealist rendering of the composition.
