Lot Essay

The Bodegn con vaso offered for sale here is an outstanding example of Amelia Pelez's later work and was among her last works completed before she died. The Santoro family, Italian diplomats who had become friends with the artist, commissioned the piece during their posting in Havana. Mrs. Santoro requested the rare and unique format to fit an antique frame that she possessed.

This painting comprehends several prominent aspects of Amelia's art, the inspiration of stained glass windows, the trend toward pure abstraction and her flat intricate intertwining patterns. Here, the artist demonstrates her understanding and mastery of the effects of tropical light on an interior. This is all unified by the thick black lines that outline and frame the color areas in a manner reminiscent of the lead in stained glass windows.
