A PALE CELADON AND RUSSET JADE 'ELEPHANT AND BOYS' GROUP

The elephant solidly carved standing with its head sharply turned towards the back, an elaborately decorated tasseled cloth falling to its feet on either side beneath the quatrefoil saddle, a boy with vase scrambling on its back, looking towards another balancing on its tail and holding a ruyi sceptre to one side, the stone of pale cleadon tone with white mottling and russet inclusions

Lot Essay

The subject of 'elephant with children holding a vase' is a popular Qing subject. It refers to the Chinese rebus tai ping jing xiang, which can be translated as 'peace and prosperous future'. Compare an example with similar subject-matter and composition exhibited, Chinese Jade Animals, Urban Council Hong Kong, 1996, Catalogue, no.177, p.184.
