A RARE PAIR OF INCISED FAMILLE VERTE DISHES
CHENGHUA SIX-CHARACTER MARKS IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE WITHIN A DOUBLE CIRCLE, KANGXI

Each delicately enameled in the center with a bird in profile perched on a fruiting peach branch issuing from the lower right corner of the shallow well, superimposed upon a ground lightly incised with a pair of dragons writhing amidst clouds within scroll borders and confronting on a slip-molded shou character medallion in the center, all below the rim encircled by border of stylized, conjoined bats picked out in iron-red, one with rim frit and small chip to underside--8 1/8in. (20.6cm.) diam. (2)

Lot Essay

The incised and slip-molded decoration on these dishes appears to be quite unusual. However, an identical pair in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Morrison was included in the exhibition, Selections of Chinese Art from Private Collections in the Metropolitan Area, China Institute in America, November 15, 1966-February 15, 1967, Catalogue, no. 66, where it is noted that they had been in the Guy May Collection and illustrated by Cox, The Book of Pottery and Porcelain, vol. II, New York, 1949, fig. 855
