Lot Essay

Barbara was the daughter of John Steel of London and his wife Sarah, daughter of Edward Nichols of Hendon. Her brother John recorded a pedigree at the Herald's hesitation of Leicestershire in 1683, and there is a note in the records that 'Mr. Steel vouched his arms to be Steel but offered nothing in justification', so it is possible that Barbara did not establish a right to the arms for Steel shown in the painting. The coat-of-arms are those of the Baker family if Sissinghurst, Kent, sometime Baronets, but there is not a proven family connection with Daniel Baker.
