Lot Essay

Sir Joseph Yorke (1724-1792) was the third son of Philip Yorke, first Earl of Hardwicke, by his wife Margaret. In 1749 he preceded Lord Albemarle to Paris as secretary of the embassy. In 1756 he was to act as British minister at The Hague to have his status raised to ambassador in 1761. He was created Baron Dover on 18 September, 1788, and died in 1792 leaving no issue.
