Lot Essay

The costume was originally worn by his father at the ball on the last night of the Eglinton Tournament. The medieval style tournament took place in August 1839 at Eglinton Castle, Ayrshire and was a reaction against the removal of the medieval Coronation Banquet from Queen Victoria's Coronation in June 1838. Captain J. O. Fairlie of Goodham was among the fourteen knights who jousted and on the last day obtained the highest score.
