Lot Essay

First produced in 1783 and thereafter revised and re-issued when necessary, this edition was clearly done to reflect the new Bristish flags resulting from the Act of Union [with Ireland] of 1801. It also includes several European flags altered in the wake of the French Revolution and the inclusion of the Royal Standard of George III current until 1816 likewise assists in dating it fairly precisely. The ragged left-hand edge probably indicated that this chart was bound into an atlas and, like all these ealry flag charts, may be regarded as very rare.
