built by M. Saville from rock maple. apple, box and holly with masts, yards, stun's'l booms, foot ropes, left and right hand wound standing and running rigging with scale blocks, carved and painted figurehead in the form of of a uniformed soldier, hair rails, anchors with bound wooden stocks, bitts, belaying rails and pins, companionways, stove pipe, carved ship's boat lashed in chocks with thwarts, oars and mast, gratings, bilge pumps, deck lights, capstan, twelve guns in carriages with tackle, tiller and other details. The hull, with rudder and interior complete with many fittings and details is finished on the starboard side with copper plating to the waterline and with ribs exposed on the port side, mounted within a temporary glass case. Pelican was originally built by the French as a Privateer, she joined the American Navy and named Fredrick. Captured by the Royal Navy in 1781 she was renamed and was sold out of the service in 1783.
