with cut away masts, capstan, bollards, ventilator, winch, deck rails, companionways, hatches, superstructure with deck house, open bridge with wing bridges, cut away funnel, engine room lights, lockers, deck seats and other details. The hull with carved and gilded bow and stern decoration and rudder, is finished in pink and black and mounted within bow-fronted and carved display case for wall mounting (glass cracked) with inscription S.S. Medway L, 226ft B, 31ft D, 15ft8in S.P. Swan & Hunter, Builders Sunderland. Measurements overall -- 14 x 67in. (35.5 x 170cm.)

The screw steamer Medway was built by Austin & Hunter at Sunderland and completed in April 1879. Designed with a single funnel and two schooner-rigged masts, she was constructed with four main bulkheads and was fitted with a 99hp. compound engine by the North East Marine Engineering Company, also of Sunderland. Registered at 944 tons gross (606 net & 795 underdeck), Medway measured 226 feet in length with a 13 foot beam and her Port of Registry was London.
