The iron screw yacht Dotterel was designed and built by Ramage & Ferguson at Leith in 1887. Registered at 165 tons gross (112net), she measured 119 feet in length with a 20 foot beam and was powered by one of her builder's own 3-cylinder engines. Consistently rated 100A1 by Lloyd's Surveyors, her size and obvious reliability made her an ideal candidate for war service and she was hired as a tender on 20th April 1918. Renamed Dotter, she was subsequently purchased by the Admiralty in 1919 although she disappears from record after she was disposed of in June 1922.
