The 499-ton Northumberland, designed and built in 1763, was owned by Mr. Charles Foulis and commanded by Captain John Mitford. Her maiden voyage began when she left her anchorage in the Downs in company with three other Indiamen on 20 February, 1764. After a round trip to China, via India, which lasted seventeen months, she returned home in July 1765. Subsequent voyages were to China from December 1766 to May 1768 and to Bombay from April 1770 to June 1772, and again from March 1774 to June 1776, after which she disappears from record having probably been sold and renamed. Captain Mitford remained Northumberland's commander for the majority of her career with the East India Company.
