The rectangular ormolu bezel with cartouche to the top and small volutes to the sides, bevelled glass dial signed Ch Oudin Hger. de la Marine l'Etat Palais Royal 52, etched and gilt Roman and Arabic chapters with pierced metal hands, the ormolu plinth cast with acanthus leaves and applied with ribbon-tied flowers, the going barrel movement in the base with platform lever escapement and signed Charles Oudin on the backplate

Lot Essay

Charles Oudin is listed as working at Palais Tribunat, Gallerie de Pierre, Gallerie Montpensier, Palais National and from 1860 until 1890 in Palais Royale. The company became known as Charles Oudin & Cie. after 1870. He apprenticed under the great Master Abraham Louis Breguet (d. 1823) and was renowned for making top quality watches in the style of Breguet.
