Lot Essay

The Vitruvian scroll frieze relates to the bases for mantel clocks made by Joseph Baumhauer, one of which is in the Wallace Collection (Illustrated in F.J.B. Watson, Wallace Collection Catalog, 1956, pl. 55, fig. 267). A similar encrier was sold, Sotheby's Monaco, 16 June 1990, lot 940.
