Château d'Yquem--Vintage 1967
Sauternes, 1er grand cru classé. Château-bottled
In original wooden cases
Tasting note: I am abashed to admit that I have consumed this wine on over 40 occassions since 1973, nearly half since 1980. With the exception of a slightly woody bottle and one slightly maderised, due, I suspect, to poor keeping, it is a great wine, as its owner Alexandre de Lur-Saluces, is not too modest to admit. I have noted slight differences in colour, ranging from a palish pure yellow gold to a rich burnished old gold; sometimes it appears to be very sweet, at other times medium-sweet with a dry finish. Doubtless the latter depends on the context, the place, the company, above all the food it happens to accompany. But it is an outstanding Yquem. I have more than once, out of curiosity, timed the way the nose blossoms in the glass; very positive, buttery. Ten minutes later, lovely fruit, pineapple; after 35 minutes, sweet ambrosial Turkish delight; 70 minutes later glorious; after 90 minutes perfection; after four hours starting to turn into a tea-like decline. On the palate, assertive yet beguiling, with zestful acidity. In weight more like like '53 than '59.
Years of life ahead. ***** MB GVWBII
