Lot Essay

The offered lot, with its acutely bowed and scrolled legs, relates to two consoles after designs by François Cuvilliés the Elder (d.1768),illustrated in H. Schmitz, Deutsche Möbel des Barock und Rococo, 1923, pp. 110-111. The naïve carving of the stretcher, however, indicates a more provincial origin for this piece. François Cuvilliés the Elder (1695-1768) was a Flemish architecte-dessinateur brought to the Royal court by Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria to design furniture and boiseries in the Régence taste.
