Lot Essay

Globe worktables were among the most finely crafted pieces made by the Biedermeier cabinetmakers, and are extremely rare. The globe form. with its interpenetrating hemispheres and fitted interior displays a high degree of technical mastery. The carved figure is illustrated in G. Himmelheber, Kunst des Biedermeier 1815-1835, 1989, fig. 105. Another globe table similarly decorated with astrological symbols is illustrated in A. Wilkie, Biedermeier, 1987, p. 101, fig. 92.
