Maker's mark of Carl-Gustav Kretzner, Riga, circa 1720, the rim struck with unidentified Cyrillic mark, chasing probably Russian, circa 1760
Cylindrical and on three ball feet cast and chased with female's busts, terminating in applied cartouches with putti, the body chased slightly later with rococo scrolls, shells and buildings, the domed cover flat chased with bands of strapwork and inset with a medal, with bud final chased with female masks and scrolls, the handle with masks and fruit, thumbpiece and chased scroll handle, marked on base

Lot Essay

The commemorative medal is that for King Gustavus II Adolphus of Sweden (1611-1632), by Simon Dadler. The reverse is struck with the scene of the Swedish army before the city of Riga. The medal commemorates the capture of the city by the Swedish in 1621.
