A George III silver-gilt cup and cover
Maker's mark of Joseph Cradock and William Ker Reid, London, 1817, the finial with maker's mark of Francis Higgins, London, circa 1890
Vase-shaped and on circular foot chased with a band of water-leaves, the lower part of the body chased with leaves on a matted ground, the body chased with a racing scene and later engraved with an inscription within a berried laurel wreath, with two cornucopiae bracket handles terminating in bacchic masks, the cover with gadrooned rim, a band of water-leaves and a detachable horse finial, on ebonised wood base, marked on side, cover and finial, with later French import marks
The cup 16in. (42cm.) high
105ozs. (3,282gr.)
The inscription reads: 'JOCKEY CLUB CUP CALLISTRATE NEWMARKET 1894'

Lot Essay

The French horse Callistrate, at 7 to 1 on, easily won the Jockey Club Cup of 1894 as the field consisted of only two horses. He was placed in the Gold Cup and had just been placed in the Cesaerwitch and Cambridgeshire Handicap of 1894.
