Vase-shaped and spreading circular foot, with two reeded leaf-capped bracket handles, the detachable domed cover with detachable horse and jockey finial, with thistle, shamrock, acorn, oak-leaf and rose borders, the body engraved with two thistle cartouches each with presentation inscription, marked on body, cover and finial, in wood box with brass lock-plate and carrying handle

Lot Essay

The present race course at Kelso was opened in 1822, previously racing had taken place at Caverton Edge. Both race-courses were owned by the Duke of Roxburghe. The first meets at Caverton Edge were funded by the Caledonian Hunt, who gave a plate of 50 guineas to be run for in 1751. In 1793 the King's Hundred Guineas began.
