Lot Essay

A. G. Grimwade in London Goldsmiths, 1697-1837 notes that Knopfell was a journeymen working for Paul de Lamerie on the latter's death in 1751, and that it was Knopfell, and another journeyman, who were chosen to complete the unfinished commissions in hand. Although there is no record of his apprenticeship or freedom, the address given by him, when he entered his only mark in 1751, was Little Windmill Street, St. James's, Lamerie's workshop before his move to Gerard Street. Lamerie left Knopfel 15 in his will, dated 24 May 1750.
