UNMARKED, CIRCA 1710
Details
A Queen Anne double silver-mounted tortoiseshell snuff-box
Unmarked, circa 1710
Oval and with moulded borders, the hinged tortoiseshell cover and base each inset with an oval cartouche, one engraved with a coat-of-arms within foliage mantling, the other with a lozenge-of-arms with countess' coronet above, the hinges with acanthus foliage decoration
3in. (7.5cm.) long
The first arms are those of France quartering England within a bordure, as borne by the Dukes of Beaufort
The second are those Coventry impaling Somerset, for Ann, Countess of Coventry (d.1763), daughter of Henry, 1st Duke of Beaufort (1629-1700) and wife of Thomas, 2nd Earl of Coventry (d.1710), whom she married in 1691. They had one son, also called Thomas, 3rd Earl of Coventry, who died at the age of 8 while at Eton. The title reverted to his uncle, Gilbert, 4th Earl of Coventry (d.1719), therefore it is probable the Countess bequeathed the box to her family where is passed by descent.
